The challenge


Lists. For many they're reserved for the supermarket shop, but even if only a loaf of bread you’re ticking off, it’s so very satisfying to put pen to paper and make that mark. Job done, procrastination fought, you’ve achieved something; now go and make that cheese on toast.

Indeed the type of lists I mostly frequent are those of the never-ending ‘to-dos’. The sort that linger around for far too long, slowly niggling away at the back of your mind and all the while keeping your feet firmly on the familiar and repetitive ground.

The time has come therefore, to try a new type of list. Not one of items I have to buy, or tasks I have to do. No, this will be a list of things I want to accomplish, places I want to explore or skills I want to acquire.

Now despite my slight obsession and undeniable euphoria in experiencing anything new (studies do show that trying new things wards off dementia after all) a little motivation is required in order to neglect those ‘to-dos’ and make way for the ‘want-tos’.

So here it is: I turn 30 in August 2017, what better opportunity to set a challenge? 30 ‘want-tos’ before I’m 30. More aptly named, my 'What by when?'.

Not all extravagant, adventurous or life-moulding. Just 30 things to get a little excited about, 30 things to feel I have achieved and 30 things to remind me (and perhaps you dear reader) that life is for living, not for ‘to-doing’.
